Plant Care

Light: Calathea ornata prefers bright, indirect light. Protect it from direct sunlight, as too much sun can scorch its leaves. Place it near a window with filtered sunlight or in a spot with consistent, indirect light.

Temperature: Maintain a warm and consistent temperature for your Calathea ornata, ideally between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid exposing it to drafts, sudden temperature fluctuations, or temperatures below 60°F (15°C).

Humidity: Calathea Ornata requires high humidity to thrive. Increase humidity around the plant by misting it regularly, using a humidity tray, or using a humidifier. Grouping plants together can also help create a more humid microclimate.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the top inch (2.5 cm) of the soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure that the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), you may need to water more frequently, while in the dormant season (fall and winter), reduce watering.

Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix to ensure adequate aeration and moisture retention. Adding perlite or orchid bark can improve drainage.

Fertilization: Feed your Calathea Ornata with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to salt buildup in the soil.

Pruning: Trim or remove any yellowing or damaged leaves as they appear. This helps maintain the plant's appearance and redirects energy to healthy growth.

Repotting: Repot your Calathea Ornata when it becomes root-bound or outgrows its container. Spring is the best time for repotting. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one to prevent overwatering.

Pests: Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests like spider mites and mealybugs. If you notice any infestations, treat them promptly with insecticidal soap or Neem oil.
