If you love succulents, you’ve probably spent a lot of time thinking through how you would like to display your succulents. These desert plants are beautiful on their own, but they truly do shine when showcased in a pot. One of the beautiful aspects of these plants is just how versatile they are - which means you have a lot of different ways to showcase your succulents.
The team at Shop Succulents is here to share their thoughts on the best ways to pot and display succulents!
Potting Succulents
Before we begin, it’s important to start with the basics. Wherever you decide to pot your succulents, be sure to consider how you are potting them. Succulents are their own unique type of plant, and what might work for one type of plant might not transfer over well to the next. Your experience in potting moth orchids or African lilies is not a perfect translation to the unique needs of succulents.
There are some differences from one variety of succulents to the next, and we encourage you to research any variety of succulents you wish to purchase before doing so. However, all in all, succulents tend to do best in sandy, porous soil with good drainage. This drainage helps prevent rot, as too much time in still water leads to the decay of the plant.
Remember, most succulents are not native to desert climates. Most varieties of succulents are found in countries like Mexico and South Africa, where the climate is certainly dry but not as bone-dry as a true desert. The more you can mimic those conditions with sandy soil, direct sunlight, and the right amount of water, the better your succulents will fare.
As a rule of thumb, be sure to….
- Select a Pot With Drainage
- Find the Right Soil
- Be Sure Your Succulents Aren’t Packed Too Tight or Loose
- Ensure Your Succulents Are Above the Rim of the Pot
- Be Careful When Potting
Again, each succulent varietal is different, and some will fare better with more sunlight while others will thrive with less. However, these tips are a great starting place when selecting a pot for your succulents.
Living Wall Succulents
Most people, when they think of succulents, envision a succulent pot on an end table or coffee table. This is a common and beautiful way to pot a succulent, but there are others. If you have the living space for it, a wall-mounted succulent pot could be a unique and interesting way to display your succulents.
If you are intrigued by the idea of wall pots but don’t want to modify any existing structures, then the living wall option might make a lot of sense for you. With the introduction of a few wooden or plastic shapes, you can begin to weave succulents into your walls. These hanging planters allow you to make a “living wall.”
If you don't have a window pot area, a window sill could be a valid option. Just be sure that you consider the sunlight. 4-6 hours of direct sunlight is usually the right amount for most succulent varietals. If you’re providing the succulent with enough light, they’ll almost start to “blush” and will slightly change colors. If the plant is receiving too much sunlight, its leaves will start to display pale spots.
Planters
Planters are a great option as well. We’ve seen some very inventive and interesting examples over the years. Some of our favorites include elevated outdoor beds, outdoor vases, and indoor planter troughs. There are so many different ways of utilizing planters, which makes it a great option for potting succulents.
Terrariums
Terrariums are a great way to host a succulent collection. Succulents flourish in arid and semi-dry countries like South Africa and Mexico, so mimicking these climes in a terrarium is a great idea. Plus, terrariums are just a stylish and interesting piece for any house, with or without succulents. We really love hearing from succulent lovers who host succulents along with a pet like a lizard or a tarantula in the same terrarium. Just be sure, if you do go this route, that you research the succulent varietal. Some are safe to leave with reptiles; others are not.
Custom Pots
Custom pots provide an endless stream of options because, well, the sky is the limit. If you can find the pot, you can place a succulent in it! We’ve seen everything from skull-shaped succulent pots and pots shaped like cartoon characters to novelty pots and pots with custom messages printed on them. The possibilities are quite literally endless.
